American professor, historian, writer, and activist for a variety of peace and social justice causes
Marcus Rediker is Distinguished Professor of Atlantic
History at the University of Pittsburgh. His books have won numerous
awards and been translated into sixteen languages. These include The
Many-Headed Hydra (2000, with Peter Linebaugh); Villains of All
Nations (2004); The Slave Ship (2007); The
Amistad Rebellion (2012); Outlaws of the Atlantic (2014),
and most recently The Fearless Benjamin Lay (2017).
Rediker is also the producer of the prize-winning documentary film Ghosts
of Amistad: In the Footsteps of the Rebels (Tony Buba, director),
about the popular memory of the 1839 Amistad rebellion in
contemporary Sierra Leone. He is currently working as Guest Curator in
the JMW Turner gallery at Tate Britain. He recounts his twenty-year
engagement with Haitian art in an article, Vodou Surrealism,
written for the 57th Carnegie International in 2018.
