Damballa Wèdo

Pierre, Andre (Haitian, 1916 – 2005)

In the Catholic Church, it is equivalent to St. Patrick. He symbolizes water. The rainbow symbolizes the alliance between God and Danmbala. When Danmbala speaks, the seven thunders respond. His right foot is set upon the earth and his left foot is set upon the sea. He draws water from the sea to irrigate the earth. After irrigating the earth, he raises his right hand toward the heavens to praise the Lord who lives forever and who created heaven and earth, the sea and everything that comes to be. There won’t be any universal flood because Danmbala Wedo has the power to close the heavens, to stop the rains, to change water into blood, to send on the world all sorts of plagues whenever the world so deserves. ~ Andre Pierre (translated from Creole)
