Possède Diabolique, 1949

Ledain, G (Haitian, 20th Century)

oil on board. Framed.
16'' x 20'', 41 x 51 cm (board)
16.75'' x 20.75'', 43 x 53 cm (frame).

Provenance: Jonathan Demme, Private Collection, New York, N.Y.

Demme enjoyed collecting lesser known artists, particularly from the early years of the Centre d'Art (Port-au-Prince, Haiti). Demme exhibited these paintings at his home and in public venues alongside well known Haitian artists and celebrated them equally. The Ledaim was one of Demme's favorite paintings.

Only a handful of paintings are known by Ledain and little information about him is available. Ledain's interior scenes and powerful Vodou depictions rival (and possibly exceed) those of his better known contemporaries.
