Vincent, Rene (Haitian, 1911 - ?)



Through the acquisition of RenĂ© Vincent’s 1940 painting Le combat des coqs (Cock Fight), the Museum of Modern Art became the first major art institution abroad to acknowledge the importance of the Indigenist painting movement in Haiti. Through a close analysis of documents in the MoMA Archives, this essay challenges the dominant narrative about the development and internationalization of Haitian art in the 1940s.
