Recent Acquisitions: Place des Amoureux, 1968 by Pierre Edugene (Haitian b. 1941)

One of our members, recently aquired the painting Place des Amoureux by Pierre Edugene. On the back is a label from Le Centre d'Art. Selden Rodman wondered if Jasmin Joseph's animals were an influence on Edugene or Edugene was an influence on Jasmin Joseph. Pierre Edugene's paintings are rare. The Figge Museum currently has three Pierre Edugene paintings in the Haitian Collection.

Here is Place des Amoureux, on the right side. On the left is The Feast is one of the paintings included in the exhibit Restoring The Spirit: Celebrating Haitian Art . Curated by Rima Girnius, Ph.D., the curator at the Figge Museum, Restoring the Spirit is a landmark survey of Haiti’s complex visual traditions from 1940 to the present, a portrait of its artists’ devotion to creative endeavors in the face of national adversity.

The Feast, n.d., gift of the Estate of Dr. Walter E. Neiswanger.
